Pest Control - Invasive Species part 2

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Stephanie McIntyre Invasive species are a potential menace to people and to our native species. While some pests from foreign lands can be managed naturally, or by effective control methods - others are very difficult to control. With few, if any, natural predators, and in some cases no present means of effective control; some of these out of town uninvited pests threaten our landscape, industry, and even much of our country as we know it. Here are two of them that have become particularly problematic. Japanese beetles - cause large scale plant destruction for farmers, gardeners and homeowners, in both the adult and larval stages. This is a very different situation from that which exists in its native home of Japan, where natural predators help to control it. In Japan, intestinal parasites, nematodes, and several species of parasitic wasps and flies keep this voracious insect under control. But they are not here in numbers sufficient to manage our beetle problem. The problem with Japanese beetles isn’t that each one eats a lot, but that there are so many of them, and together they can devastate an areas’ plants. Starting at the top of a plant and eating their way down, they can leave a plant that looks like a green skeleton. The grubs on the other hand can ruin turf grasses, and damage many other plants by eating the roots. And the beetles aren’t that selective in what they will consume. They will eat hundreds of different plant species: damage from these insects totals in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s not hard to identify an adult beetle. They’re metallic green, about 3/8″ long with bronze wing covers (and usually there’s more than one). The grubs, which are only found by digging, are white and curled up and about 1″ long. Two of the natural controls from Japan, nematodes and Milky Spore disease can be purchased in this country, and applied to the ground. This can help to control grubs, and to a lesser extent adults since they must first go through the larval stage. But since beetles can fly in and out of feeding areas, these controls are only effective if surrounding homes use them as well. The natural pest control product, neem oil, is believed to repel Japanese beetles. Like any product that’s applied by spraying - it must be applied on a regular basis to replenish it. It is however less toxic than chemical sprays, for those who have children and pets, or would like to impact the environmental as little as possible. Fire ants - which are native to South America, have become a serious pest in some parts of the United States. They were inadvertently introduced into the U.S. in the 1930’s in Mobile, Alabama, and have since spread throughout the southeastern part of the country and California. These ants are pests because they deliver a painful and venomous sting that burns the unfortunate person who steps in their midst: and because their large mounds can damage plants and crops. Being stung by a fire ant is a particularly painful experience because of the way they deliver their stings. They will anchor themselves to a victim with their mandibles, and sting continuously until stopped. Fire ants will sometimes attack and kill small animals. They can be difficult to control, but there are products available to do so. There are both baits and insecticides designed to control fire ants on lawns and in yards. Also effective is a species of fly that’s native to S. America, which lays its eggs in an ant’s head. When the young hatch, they eat the inside of the head and kill the ant. This species of fly, called the ant decapitating fly, has been successfully introduced in a number of states with a fire ant problem. However, not all introductions of it have been successful. The sting of the fire ant is painful and will usually form a bump similar to an acne outbreak a day later. The bites are a problem not only because they are irritating and unattractive but because they can also become infected. And some people are allergic to the venom from fire ants, and need emergency attention because of anaphylaxis. Stephanie McIntyre and Wendell Bryant are Internet developers. Orlistat: the Only Non-controlled Anti-obesity Prescription Drug Approved by the FDA

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Julian_Chee] Julian Chee Obesity refers to an excessive amount of body fat. Most health care professionals agree that men with more than 25 percent body fat and women with more than 30 percent body fat are obese. Most available weight-loss medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are appetite-suppressant medications. However, Orlistat is one drug that works in a different way. Orlistat works by reducing the body’s ability to absorb dietary fat by about one third. It does this by blocking the enzyme lipase, which is responsible for breaking down dietary fat. When fat is not broken down, the body cannot absorb it, so fewer calories are taken in. Prescription weight-loss medications should be used only by patients who are at increased medical risk because of their weight. They should not be used for “cosmetic” weight loss. Prescription weight loss drugs are approved only for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above, or 27 and above if they have obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (abnormal amounts of fat in the blood), or type 2 diabetes. BMI is a measure of weight in relation to height. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy. Approved for long-term use Only 2 medications have been approved for long term use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Orlistat is one of them. Obesity is a chronic disease that affects many people and often requires long-term treatment to promote and sustain weight loss. Non-Controlled Substances When considering long-term weight-loss medication treatment for obesity, one of the concerns is the potential for abuse and dependence. Currently, all prescription medications to treat obesity except orlistat are controlled substances, meaning doctors need to follow certain restrictions when prescribing them. Weight-loss medication for children and teens [http://www.weightloss-diet-clinic.com/diet-pill-orlistat/treatments.asp?page=1] Orlistat is currently approved for use in teens age 12 or above. Other weight-loss medications are not approved for use in children under the age of 16, although studies in children and teens are ongoing. Side Effects Some side effects of orlistat include cramping, intestinal discomfort, passing gas, diarrhea, and leakage of oily stool. These side effects are generally mild and temporary, but may be worsened by eating foods that are high in fat. Also, because orlistat reduces the absorption of some vitamins, patients should take a multivitamin (Vitamin D,E,A and beta-carotene) at least 2 hours before or after taking orlistat. Pros and Cons of the Age Gap

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Graham Billingham Being with someone who is several years older or younger than you can be both a blessing and a curse. Before you decide to get serious, you should know what you’re getting into. If you’re younger… PROS You get to be with someone mature. Someone who doesn’t “act out” or throw tantrums just because you happened to mention that you have a crush on a celebrity. Also, because of your lover’s life experience, he/she can dish out valuable advice that you couldn’t get from your friends. You can learn a thing or two - and I’m not just talking about life lessons. Older people have had more sexual experiences, and if you’ve got the right lover, he or she won’t hesitate to teach you some new “moves”. Your lover is more interesting than people your age. Again, this is mostly because of life experiences. Older men and women have gone through enough problems and opportunities, and they have several funny, inspiring, painful, and horrifying stories to tell. Also, if the age gap is wide enough, the type of music or movies that he or she likes may be completely different from yours, and getting a taste of these “oldies” can help you grow culturally. CONS Emotional baggage. The older man and the older woman have enough emotional baggage to drag you down. Beware of verbally psychoanalyzing their actions - it’s unlikely that they want a “kid” to tell them what they did wrong in their lives. Instead, be understanding and make sure that your older lover isn’t an emotional vampire who will suck you dry. If you’re older… PROS The younger man/woman can inspire you with a sense of awe. Having a young, new body next to you can knock a few years off of your own age. You get to do more youthful things, and you tap the mindset of today’s youth. The younger lover doesn’t have that much emotional baggage. This means that things are more “happy-go-lucky” and smoother with the younger lover. You won’t get late night conversations about every ex that’s ever broken his or her heart. Also, there’s not much that you can get compared to. Odds are, if he or she says that you’re the best sex in his/her life, it’s true. The younger lover looks up to you. This is because of all the advice and life lessons you have to offer. You’ve been through a lot, and your lover knows this. Odds are, you’re the first one he or she talks to during times of conflict. CONS The younger lover can be immature. Sometimes, young lovers are such perfectionists that they seek all sorts of things that you can’t give. This is why, if you want to go out with someone younger, make sure that he or she is mature for his or her age. Graham Billingham writes for DrDating.com. Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

These loans are an ideal option for those who do not like to bear the burden of high interest. It advances you cash without putting any heavy burden on you. So, you can fulfill your various needs without being worried about the interest rate. It becomes easy to get approval for cheap loan if you offer collateral. Above all there will be flexibility in terms and conditions of the loan. But it should be remembered that your property may be taken away in case of failure to repay your loan. Cheap loans can be availed without collateral also. But it is not easy to avail an unsecured cheap loan. Unsecured cheap loan does not provide any security to lender for getting the money back. Do You Love Flowers? Design a Cutting Garden and Grow Your Own

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Larry Gildea If you love flowers and enjoy having them in your home but cant afford buying cut flowers, flower gardening is for you. Too much work? Dont have time? Hate the weeding, watering and fertilizing? Well, take heart, cutting gardens are easy to establish and fun to care for. Think of all that beauty around you every time you set foot into that fantastic garden. Cutting gardens can be traced back to the sixteenth century. If you dont have space for a full sized cutting garden, grow a perennial or annual flower border around you vegetable garden or lawn. There is nothing magic or complicated about planting a cutting garden. The same steps that apply to a flower garden apply to a vegetable garden. They’re simple: a) Location b) Design c) What to plant d) Soil selection and preparation e) Maintenance A flower bed for a cutting garden should be placed in a spot that gets plenty of sunshine. Find an out of the way spot where you will be free to work without worrying about getting in the way of other plants. After all, this garden is for producing flowers that will be harvested for use in indoor spaces. Since this garden is for production, dont worry too much about how it looks. Layout depends on how much space you have. Long rows are the easiest to plant and maintain. If the space limits you from planting in rows consider, planting in square plots or beds. Make sure you layout the beds with space around them for maintaining and cutting the flowers. Flower gardens are no different that any other garden. The soil is the primary key to your success. The soil should be loose but not fall apart when you squeeze some in your hand. It should not form a solid ball either. The soil should hold moisture but also allow the moisture to drain away. Once you have tested the soil you can go about bringing it up to your specifications by working in organic material such as compost and peat moss. Once this is accomplished, work in a slow release fertilizer. Apply enough fertilizer to last through the growing season. Always contact a specialist at your garden supply store or nursery for answers to questions about composting and fertilizing the soil. Now the decision as to what to plant. Simple, plant the flowers you like and enjoy. Dont settle on annuals alone. Plant perennials, too. Bulbs and some foliage plants must also be considered. ear. Your flower garden will require watering. Dont sprinkle the surface of the soil. Sprinkling only penetrates the soil and inch or two and will encourage shallow root systems on your plants. Plants should be watered weekly down to 5 to 6 inches to assure deep root systems and plenty of moisture. You may want to consider a drip irrigation system. Drip irrigation systems assure an optimum supply of water is available. Most importantly, a drip irrigation system will allow for air to be available constantly. Heavy watering saturates the soil and causes extreme fluctuations in moisture and aeration. Drip irrigation systems are easy to install and relatively inexpensive for a small garden. These systems dont require the amount of time on site a hose watering system does. Also, if you wish you can set them up with a timing system. Cutting flower gardens have been grown specifically for making flower arrangements for several centuries. Growing a cutting flower garden is as simple as following a few simple steps: location, design, soil preparation. If flowers help brighten your life, dont spend another growing season looking around your local supermarket or floral shop for some nice flowers to buy to brighten up your home. Grow your own and have whatever you want. Its just a matter of starting. Copyright Larry Gildea, All Rights Reserved. Choosing The Proper Diet For Weight Loss

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Carl DiNello The title of this article can be a little deceiving as there really is no one diet that will be the “proper diet” for everyone. However, all humans have enough similar broad categories, as well as many specifics, that a basic diet blueprint can be established. Over the years, a great deal of nutritional research has continually proven that a good diet falls into the category of the “old-fashioned balanced diet.” As more and more fad diets continue to come and go, the balanced diet concept has remained largely unchanged for over 60 years. The fad diets seem to have one common problem; they almost all go too far in one direction or another, such as the low-carb, high protein diets popular today. Eating a healthy diet, that will also result in weight loss and controlled weight management is not that difficult. A person interested in optimizing their health and possibly shedding a few pounds should consume, on a daily basis, meals consisting of fruits and vegetables, dairy, whole grains, and a source of protein. The only exceptions to this would be individuals with special dietary needs. As examples; someone who is lactose intolerant, or someone with food allergies. In the proper portion the four traditional food groups, continue to be the undisputed recommendation of the most reputable nutritional scientists. The reason is quite simple. Studies continue to show that these four traditional food groups provide all the necessary components required by the body to maintain the proper electrolyte balance, perform muscle maintenance, cellular repair, and many other essential activities including the necessary energy to get them all done. Sometimes we get lost in our pursuit of the proper diet. We must remember that nature, as discovered by science, determines the bodies needs - not marketing. A healthy, balanced diet will supplement your weight loss efforts. It’s just not smart to deprive your body of any of it’s required nutrients. Here are examples of the importance of some of these nutrients: Insoluble fiber will come to us from fruit, vegetables and grains. This fiber does not readily digest, and as a result helps in cleansing our digestive system. Vitamins (D, B, E, K), along with minerals (lithium, calcium, potassium) are necessary to carry out thousands of biochemical reactions that are critical to our health. Potassium, and Sodium (in moderation), assist our heart muscle with the pumping of blood through the entire body. Protein is necessary for the body to split into essential amino acids, which will then be used to build new proteins used for muscle. Carbohydrates that are easily converted to glucose provide the starting point of the energy generation cycle that serves to fuel all the other processes. This is called the Krebs Cycle and is the fundamental process that converts sugars into ATP, which in turn is converted to ADP, releasing energy. While fad diets may supply many of these essentials, they typically do so in the wrong proportions. Usually, too much at one time, and not enough at another. A fad diet may also contain additional components that are not all helpful, and - in excess - could be harmful. An example would be excessive fats, or complex sugars. Fad diets do not provide a healthy, balanced diet. While moderation and regularity may sound boring, they are the key to a proper diet that will complement your weight loss efforts without sacrificing the nutrition your body needs. The In Your Face Gay Marriage Rioters

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Lance Winslow Well the Christian Right seems to be winning many victories on the gay marriage issue lately. In Massachusetts it was a big defeat for gay marriage rights. Why is the gay and lesbian association being beaten on what should be a simple Constitutional issue of equal rights for all. Is the definition of marriage between a man and a woman so set in stone that the gay marriage issue cannot be considered? Many gay and lesbian marriage rights activists are dumbfounded that the law will not allow them to get married. But you know in looking at the trends and the in your face attitude of the gay fringe, it appears to me that no one should be surprised. In fact many believe that the gay parades are a disgusting and distasteful show of disregard of family values and such. No matter how you feel about these issues we seem to have a gay fringe which is quite vocal and boisterous and a Christian Right fringe which are the same if not more. It even appears possible for these protests and parades to turn to violent protests if we cannot get each side to simmer down and mellow out. Either way it appears that the gay marriage issue maybe another decade or so away, as each state seems to be bringing back no verdicts and voter answers on the issue. Consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Pay Attention! Mastering Communication Skills with Women

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Deborah Willis One of the biggest complaints women have about men is they just don’t listen. This can cause big problems in the relationship. Sure, you may hear the words, but are you really absorbing what she is saying? It’s a serious mistake not to pay attention or take her words seriously and could mean the ultimate failure of the relationship if that bad habit continues. Women don’t just talk to hear their own voices. Most times they’re trying to get a point across to you. Listen…I mean really listen to what they’re telling you. Granted, sometimes it may seem as if she doesn’t have anything of real importance to say, and in your opinion, she’s just babbling on about nothing. But you’d better listen anyway. If your mind is wandering or you interrupt her with a comment about something totally unrelated to what she’s talking about, she’ll feel you simply don’t care about her and this can lead to hurt feelings and resentment on her part. Over time, this can seriously damage the relationship or cause its demise. You should never dismiss what a woman has to say as trivial or ignore her. Don’t just hear the words — absorb them like a sponge. Sometimes a woman may feel the need to vent her feelings if she’s upset or frustrated about something in her life. It may or may not have anything to do with you personally, but you are her sounding board. She’ll likely ask you later what you think, so you better be paying attention so your answer makes sense and relates to the subject at hand. If you’ve been tuning her out, your inattention will likely anger her, cause hurt feelings and resentment, and make her feel unimportant to you. Show her you’re interested in what she has to say. Ask her pertinent questions and listen to her answers. Sympathize with her and show her you understand how she’s feeling. To maintain a strong relationship with her, you must be her best friend and allow her to feel free to communicate with you about anything. Women are more verbal than men. She needs to know you care enough about her to listen when she speaks. Think about it…how would you feel if you were telling her about an important event in your life and she interrupts with, “I saw the cutest dress today that would match my new shoes just perfectly.” How would you feel? You’d probably be taken aback and think she couldn’t care less about what you were saying to her. It wouldn’t make you feel very important to her, would it? Of course it wouldn’t. Mutual respect is listening to one another and caring about one another’s thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs. It’s taking into consideration the feelings of the other person as well as your own feelings, particularly when making decisions that affect both of you. It’s just that simple. There is nothing so frustrating to a woman than when she is pouring out her heart and soul to you only to realize you haven’t been listening at all. Whenever a woman begins a conversation with, “We need to talk” or “I want to talk to you”…it’s time to tune out everything else going on in your brain and listen to every word she says. Those two phrases are an indication she’s about to say something important and you need to pay attention. Learning to listen is a big part of communication. The ability to communicate is a very important part of every relationship and that skill will serve you well in many aspects of life. Mastering the art of communication, including listening, is vital to your relationships with women. The Knitting Effect

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Rebecca N Morgan Yesterday, while surfing the net, I bumped into a posting about a knitting group, hosted by Panera Bread in Woburn. Being a knitter myself, and certainly a bread lover, I found the combination if not odd, well, a bit interesting.Bread and yarn, sweaters and yeast, waft and draftIt certainly is a stretch But then, maybe not. Knitting for me is a profoundly satisfying activity. So too, is eating bread. Moreover, knitting is universal, kind of like bread. Certainly grandmothers knit, and nowadays, younger women do it. Even men knit sometimes, although mostly your metro sexual kind of guy, I suppose. One could say that the effect of knitting is to bring together the masses into a unified activity with a benefit for all. Everyone can use a sweater or a scarf, or a pair of mittens. And everyone can learn how to do it. I learned when I was about six years of age. My mother taught me on a pair of green metal size nines. I made my first scarf on those nines. And I gave it to my doll who used it as a blanket. Over the years I have made many more scarves and then I branched into sweaters, with colorful patterns and complicated cables. Once I even knitted a whole dress. The beauty of knitting is that it is portable, and repetitive and relaxing. Like a mantra, knit, purlit is even possible to meditate and knit. You can do it watching TV, in the car, listening to music. You can take it to a concert, maybe even church, and now, with the invention of Knit Lite Knitting Needles by Clover Needlecraft, you can knit at the movies, or anywhere else that is dark. The glowing LED tips also make it easy to knit with dark, fuzzy, or otherwise hard to see yarns. So, back to the bread part. It all makes sense to me now. Sit in a bakery and knit while the bread bakes. Smell the delicious aroma and delight the senses. Knit and meditate, exercise those fingers, savor the bread, stay warm in a scarf. I get it. Fun With Online Dating

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Ron Steiner Online dating is something that more and more people are looking into because it is relatively risk free dating. Instead of wasting your time out on the town with a date that may or may not work out, you can now look for people online and choose to interact with them for a period of time before you actually meet! Online dating is fun, safe, and a dating resource that can get you maximum exposure with minimum effort. Young and old are having a great time with online dating because you can make it a customized experience. Online dating is usually done through dating websites, of which there are hundreds. A couple of the most popular dating websites are Yahoo Personals and www.match.com both of which have thousands of users that can all post profiles about themselves, what they are looking for, as well as the ability to interact with one another until they find a person that is just right for them. The great thing about these websites is that everyone can find someone here, as you dont have to be looking for a long term relationship to fit in, youll find people that are looking for serious and not so serious relationships on these websites. What is great about online dating is that even when you are not online you are promoting yourself. Once you post your profile and set up your membership, your information will be available to others that are looking for a date 24 hours a day. This means that even if you and your Mr. or Ms. Right would have never crossed paths before, youll have a great chance of checking out one anothers profiles and getting to know one another online. You could be living just miles away from the one but because you dont hang out in the same places or with the same crowds, you might not meet if it werent for online dating. While many relationships today progress much faster than most of us are comfortable with, with online dating you can choose to advance your interactions as quickly or as slowly as you are comfortable with. If you like to take your time and want to get to know people really well, you can take your time simply exchanging emails with possible online matches as long as you want, and then you can move to the phone, and then eventually you can meet in person. Online dating is a high tech and modern way to date, but it brings back some old school elements because the relationships dont advance so quickly. Online dating doesnt cost a lot of money or take a lot of time, which makes it appealing for many. If you want to date more but you dont have time to hit the bars and clubs to meet people, meeting people online is a great way to meet people and even create lasting relationships. With so little to lose and potentially so much to gain, it is no wonder why online dating has become so popular. Ron Steiner is 41 years old from New York.
